TNG Reviews: Season 3

In a phenomenal improvement over what had come before, season three’s count of “keeper” episodes (three or more stars) is 19 out of 26. That’s one short of twice the number to come out of the first two seasons combined! Even better, more than half of those 19 “keepers” (11) merit four or five stars (more than double the number that had come before)–and the number of one-star bombs drops from 16 in season one and 8 in season two down to just 2 in season three. Here, finally, is the show that I love!

With the start of season three, TNG finally attains its full maturity.  As with "The Child," I can't really discuss this episode without also offering some broader observations—this time about…

I have always loved this episode. It's a classic Data story, it continues to showcase the show's emergent new style and identity, and the shipboard half of the plot is…

This is another difficult episode for me to rate; it's really on the line for me between two and three stars.  I first went with three, then later downgraded it…

This, alas, is one of the few abject bombs of the third season; only one other episode besides it, I think, will warrant a one-star rating.  It does have some…

This episode can perhaps best be described as "routine."  Despite a few minor gripes, there's nothing terrible about it...but nothing great, either.  That the "promising prospective Federation member world" turns…
