TNG Reviews: Season 5

For better or worse, season 5 represents TNG at the height of its maturity as a series. All the elements that made it the show that it was were present, and there was not, as yet, any sense of a decline, or of the series showing its age—and yet, in terms of consistency or average episode quality, this season is not much different from either of the two previous ones. Season three has slightly more great AND awful episodes, and correspondingly fewer middle-of-the-road ones; season four is slightly to the other side, with a couple more three-star offerings and fewer on either extreme. But we’re talking about SLIGHT differences here. Season five IS tied with season three for the most five-star classics in a single season so far, and it does have a really remarkable cluster of top-notch entries near its end (six of its final nine episodes). It’s not perfect by any stretch, but…this was TNG, folks.
