Enemy Encounter

One of 8 “‘story type” categories that I have identified (see “TNG Story Types” under “Miscellany”). This category is for episodes that are primarily about the Enterprise, or the main characters, interacting with and having to work to try to defeat an “opponent” of some kind. The opponent might represent one of the recurring adversarial groups of the show (the Romulans, the Borg, etc.) or not, and the adversarial relationship may be on the “kill or be killed” level, or it may be more limited/restrained–but it must involve at least some level of direct threat or opposition (we’re not dealing with diplomatic negotiation stories, here), and the story focus needs to be on defeating, stopping, or outwitting the “enemy” in some way.

The Last Outpost (⭑)

This is another candidate for "worst episode ever" that (like the previous episode) belongs squarely in the "what in the name of god could the writers have been thinking" category. …

This episode is not very good, really.  However, it is much better than any other episode since the pilot.  Its plot contains no surprises, is executed clunkily, and isn't really…

The plot of this episode doesn’t stand up to even casual scrutiny, and the backdrop is a typically hokey, first-season premise (a planet of arms dealers who destroyed themselves).  But…
