Outside the Trek Milieu

One of 8 “‘story type” categories that I have identified (see “TNG Story Types” under “Miscellany”). This category is for those episodes in which a significant amount of the interest attaches purely to watching the main characters interact with some alternate setting that’s very different from the usual world of Trek—typically a historical setting, and often a “fictional” one. Many holodeck-based episodes, and perhaps some time-travel episodes, will fall here.

This episode is deeply flawed, and aspects of it are terrible—but it's still the best episode since the pilot.  The framing story about the insect race that is anal about…

I have so many mixed feelings about this episode that it's hard to know where to begin. It strikes me as fundamentally ill-conceived on some levels, and most of its…

I'm not sure if I should count "Time's Arrow" among the TNG two-parters whose second parts fail to live up to the first, or not. I mean, I do for…

A Fistful of Datas (⭑⭑⭑)

There aren't a lot of TNG episodes that aim almost exclusively for comedy; even "Rascals," the episode immediately before this one, has some non-comedic aspirations, despite its ridiculousness. But "A…
