Political Intrigue

One of 8 “‘story type” categories that I have identified (see “TNG Story Types” under “Miscellany”). A couple of somewhat different sub-types make up this category: episodes dealing with internal Federation politics, and episodes focused on political intrigue between the Federation and other major powers, or even within other societies (obviously, the whole Klingon Civil War saga comes to mind here). While there will likely be significant overlap between this second sub-category and the “Enemy Encounter” category (especially in episodes featuring the Romulans), the emphasis here is on larger-scale power politics, rather than immediate ship-to-ship tactical conflicts.

Too Short a Season (⭑)

Posted by By FlyingPenguin July 27, 2020Posted inTNG Reviews: Season 1, ⭑Tags: Political IntrigueNo Comments
What a comedown from the previous episode!  Here, once again, we return to structureless, filler-packed plotting, clunky exposition, painfully telegraphed foreshadowing, one-dimensional characterization, and a lame storyline that has no…

Coming of Age (⭑⭑)

I used to think of this episode as a semi-bright-spot in the mostly dismal first season, and not without reason.  Still, it's fraught with problems.  On a character level, the…

This is another episode that (like "We’ll Always Have Paris") I remember quite liking as a 14-year-old, so it pains me a bit to slam it too harshly—but this one,…

"A Matter of Honor," the episode immediately prior to this one, was, when it first aired, the best episode that the series had yet produced—but this one easily topped it,…

This episode is a strong enough character piece, and does enough other things really well, that it easily earns a four-star rating, even if its main plot is arguably a…

This, alas, is one of the few abject bombs of the third season; only one other episode besides it, I think, will warrant a one-star rating.  It does have some…

This is the second classic Romulan episode of season three, and like "The Enemy" before it, it's a terrific episode that makes excellent use of everything that is cool about…

This represents a sort of archetypical three-star episode and is better than many others to which I've thus far given three-star ratings (often somewhat reluctantly or with misgivings). It's a…

Argh. How does one rate an episode that entangles a delightful and moving story with an ill-conceived and irritating one? I so very, very much want to like this one.…
