Tech Trouble

One of 8 “‘story type” categories that I have identified (see “TNG Story Types” under “Miscellany”). This category is mostly for those (rarely very entertaining) episodes whose stories rely heavily on malfunctioning equipment or other weird, made-up technological problems as the main focus of the story. Many episodes in other categories will use tech problems as devices to complicate things for the characters or to bring about some interesting situation or other, but when there really isn’t much else to a story beyond “weird tech problems”—or even just when a very large portion of an episode’s running time is taken up by “what’s up with this rash of inexplicable malfunctions?” type proceedings—it goes here. (In fairness, stories that are “about” technology in some more meaningful way, or that manage to get genuine drama out of situations that revolve around damage to the ship, could also go here.)

Lonely Among Us (⭑)

Despite suffering from some of the same fundamental problems as many of the other episodes of the season, this baby immediately strikes one as a very different sort of terrible…

The Big Goodbye (⭑⭑)

Posted by By FlyingPenguin July 27, 2020Posted inTNG Reviews: Season 1, ⭑⭑Tags: Outside the Trek Milieu, Tech TroubleNo Comments
This episode is deeply flawed, and aspects of it are terrible—but it's still the best episode since the pilot.  The framing story about the insect race that is anal about…

Contagion (⭑⭑)

Posted by By FlyingPenguin July 27, 2020Posted inTNG Reviews: Season 2, ⭑⭑Tags: Tech TroubleNo Comments
This episode is sort of the opposite of the previous one ("The Dauphin"), in that it has just never really worked for me, even though I gather that it is…

Booby Trap (⭑⭑⭑)

This is another difficult episode for me to rate; it's really on the line for me between two and three stars.  I first went with three, then later downgraded it…

The Loss (⭑⭑⭑)

"The Loss" is a little-loved and admittedly fairly mediocre episode for which I nevertheless have always had a bit of a soft spot. It suffers both from Marina Sirtis's limitations…

Disaster (⭑⭑⭑)

This is one of those episodes that I personally have always really enjoyed, but that seem to be surprisingly (to me) unpopular among fans in general. I mean, sure, it…

Cost of Living (⭑)

One is almost tempted to speculate that this episode was intended as a practical joke, as in: What would happen if we paired up our show's two least compelling/palatable recurring…

Phantasms (⭑⭑⭑)

I'm not sure how much I really have to say about "Phantasms." It's...fine. I mean, it's not too hard to imagine what was going through Brannon Braga's mind when he…

Force of Nature (⭑⭑)

The infamous "speed limit episode" was intended, of course, as Trek's contribution to the political and cultural conversation on climate change, which is certainly a worthy enough topic. Unfortunately, pretty…

I scarcely know what to say about this one. I knew it was bad, but it's somehow actually much worse than I even remembered. It has no point and makes…
